Ricardo Gareca and Peru: A History of Success

From Humble Beginnings to World Cup Qualification

Ricardo Gareca is an Argentine former footballer and manager. Born in Buenos Aires in 1958, Gareca began his playing career in Argentina before moving to Peru in 1979. He went on to have a successful career in Peru, playing for several teams and winning the Peruvian championship in 1987.

After retiring from playing, Gareca began his managerial career in Peru. He has managed several teams in Peru, including Universitario, Alianza Lima, and the Peruvian national team. Under Gareca's leadership, Peru qualified for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, their first World Cup appearance in 36 years. Peru also reached the final of the 2019 Copa América under Gareca's guidance.

A New Contract and a Bright Future

In 2020, Gareca signed a new three-year contract to lead Peru through qualifying for the 2022 World Cup. Peru is currently in a good position to qualify for the World Cup, sitting third in the CONMEBOL standings. Gareca will be hoping to lead Peru to their second consecutive World Cup appearance in 2022.
